Stainless steel types
Stainless steel are mainly classified into four categories: Austenitic, ferritic, duplex and martensitic.
- Austenitic stainless steel:
- Austenitic stainless steels are non-magnetic and not heat treatable. They also have corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. 18/10 chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used. Other austenitic stainless steels also contain chromium-manganese or low-nickel grades but they feature much less corrosion resistance than high-nickel grades.
- Ferritic stainless steel:
- Ferritic stainless steels are magnetic and not heat treatable. They typically contain chromium but no nickel. Though their mechanical properties are not as strong compared to that of austenitic stainless steels, they have better decorative appeal and have stronger resistance to corrosion at high temperatures.
- Duplex stainless steel:
- Duplex stainless steels, also known as ferritic-austenic stainless steels combine attributes of both ferritic and austenitic grades which results in high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. Typical alloying elements are high percentages of chromium, moderate amounts of nickel, and varying amounts of molybdenum. Duplex grade stainless steels provides good to very high corrosion resistance and have almost twice the strength of standard austenitic grades.
- Martensitic stainless steel:
- Martensitic stainless steels are magnetic and heat-treatable. They contain chromium but usually no nickel. They feature very high hardness. Because of their high carbon content, they respond well to heat treatment. This in turn result in mechanical advantages such as hardness. However, carbon is detrimental when welding and care must be exercised when carrying out the operation.
Common Surface Finishes:
- Hot-rolled Finish: No.1
- Heat-treatment, pickling or equivalent finish after hot rolling.
- Cold-rolled Finish: No. 2B
- Finished by heat treatment, pickling or equivalent finish after cold rolling, followed by final light cold rolling to obtain adequate luster surface.
- Cold-rolled Finish: BA
- Bright heat treatment after cold rolling.
- May be used in utensils or as reflectors and in applications whereby excellent finish is desired.
- Polished: No.3
- Polished with No. 100 to No. 120 abrasives.
Polished: No.4
- Most popular of all polished finishes.
- Polished with No. 150 to No. 180 abrasives.
- Ease in cleaning, attractive appearance and high corrosion resistance.
- Polished: HL
- Finished by polishing with the abrasives of suitable grain size to obtain continuous streaks.
- “Hairline” Finish.
- Polished: No.8 (“Mirror Finish”)
- Most reflective of all finishes.
- Free of grit lines; maximum reflectivity.
- Art Finish: Emboss, Fine Art, Fine Colour
- Patterned by rolling, patterned by chemical etching and chemical colouring respectively.
